Hi, folks, I'll be using my handle from some 'net guitar forums ("Hackster") to avoid confusion with other cats here named John. (I chose my handle because I'm a total "hack" wannabe on guitar, but I love it just the same... B>)
Picked up the '87 Savage tonight (less than 9000 miles). To put it mildly, I love it (even though it *is* a bit cramped for me). My buddy who went with me to bring my car home said I must be one of those "trial by fire" guys-- the trip home was about 30 miles in the midst of an interstate traffic jam, at rush hour, in the rain... he was following me and said I almost gave him a coronary. As for me, I was having a blast... B>)
The bike runs like new. No backfiring; pretty respectable power level for interstate driving (though I've already got a Supertrapp on order, and I just won't be able to resist putzing around with the carb). But there's a problem that has me stumped.
When I met the seller today, he said, "I just noticed (since he showed me the bike Saturday), the turn signals aren't working. Probably a bulb." Me-- "Or it could be the relay, no big deal". Didn't think too much about it.
But when I got the bike home, my buddy told me the brake light wasn't working, either. I checked all the bulb filaments on a meter (turn signals and brake light) and they're all good. The taillight itself works, as does the license plate light, both headlight beams, and the low-wattage "always on" filaments on the front turn signals.
So it's just the turn signals themselves, and the brake light circuit, that aren't working. Can't help but think that the two are related, but I'm going crosseyed looking at the wiring diagram trying to find a possible common culprit. Any ideas of where to start? Anyone?
And just to re-hash some old issues, first, what oil do y'all like? I live in South Carolina, and this summer is turning out to be a real scorcher. I'm kinda torn between Castrol 20/50 and one of the synthetic blends. Also, can anyone recommend a good source for a kit to beef up the front suspension? That sucker is *way* too "divey" and will be getting attention SOON.
Regardless, I'm real pleased with the bike and the deal I got-- $1500, including a helmet, factory service manual, and assorted odds and ends. I have a suspicion that I have a new hobby... wrenching!
Cheers, and KTRSD!
John
